"If God forbade drinking, why would he have made wine so good?" (Cardinal Richeleu)
Too true, a great quote if you ever need justification to drink.
Just like the Cardinal, we love wine, so we've teamed up with Vintage Roots to bring you some great tasting organic wines. See The Litegreen Wine Rack.
All of their wine is either organic or biodynamic (we will explain in a second; it's interesting stuff) and has either travelled by road or by sea, so carbon emissions for your wine are as low as possible.
Organic: This means they use no fungicides, herbicides or fertilizers to produce their alcohol. Vines grow in living soil, full of worms and friendly bacteria and the vineyards also encourage biodiversity. For example, in California, vineyards plant plum trees in between crops, encouraging wasps to the area that eat destructive vine leafhoppers.
Biodynamic: Some vineyards take it one step further, taking a holistic view of producing wine. Taking into account the effects of the wider environment, they look at lunar cycles, earth rhythms (if your lost at this point so are we) and astrology, all employed to harmonise the wine with the environment and its capacity to bear fruit.
We think it's great that these vineyards are putting so much time and thought into producing wine, opposed to spewing pesticides over their grapes, which isn't nearly as romantic.
So when you're sipping a lovely Chardonnay in front of an open fire, you can be safe in the knowledge no pesticides are entering your body and you've done a bit to reduce carbon emissions.
Also, remember to spare a little thought to the wasps and lunar cycles that have done their bit in getting the wine delivered to your door.

Cheers!
