Tips for a Greener Ride

Topics: Litegreen Nanny, Travel

Travelling with kids can be a stressful at the best of times. Stuck in traffic with nursery rhymes blaring and your little one asking every two minutes "are we there yet?"

In-between shouting demands at you to pass their dropped toy, you try to reach around to rescue their dropped soother or book. You can picture it can't you. It's very stressful.

And through all of it you are trying to keep a watchful eye on the road. The worrying thing is that you are trying to entertain your child which is a full time job in its own right and drive at the same time. Now I know Mum's are good multi-taskers, but this is probably one of the times I would tell you not to be.

I always try to be professionally prepared; my nanny-o-mobile contains a glass screen like the ones you see in posh limos. No, in reality this means a bag of fruit and leaving at nap time; if you make the car warm they will be asleep in seconds - a trick of the trade. Although you will be hot, it will be worth it for a stress free journey. Of course, as ever there is always another tip or two from the Litegreen Nanny to ensure that you are doing the best for your baby and the environment when transport is concerned.

Car Share
There are various organisations to put you in touch with other parents so that you can do one school run in one run and not a marathon! Visit school-run.org

Walk
It's far better for you and your baby and a great way to get some exercise. Your baby will be far happier if you invest in a good sturdy pram or three-wheeler that is easy to handle and a comfortable ride.

Only use your car when you really need to
If you are travelling make sure you have a basket of quiet books in the middle of the back seat so that your child can reach another if they drop one. Have a story tape or two handy - kids really love these and it will keep them quiet for hours. Don't leave at meal times - make sure that your child is well fed and watered before you leave.

Take public transport
I know what your thinking but it really has improved and you don't have to collapse your pram.

Buy a green car
They don't incur a congestion charge or parking metre fees in Central London. How amazing is that? You'll be saving pennies and the planet. Have a look at the ETA for more information

Switch to a green insurance
ecoinsurance from CIS will help you to offset at least 20 per cent of your carbon emissions.

Happy and safe travelling.
