Summer trip tips

Topics: Holiday, Travel

We all love a summer holiday. A chance to pack your suitcase, don your sunglasses, leave your work and troubles behind and have a jolly good time. But what holiday habits are best for the planet? After all we want to leave the planet in a picture perfect state for generations to come.

Need a quit patch for flying?
Everyone seems to be giving flying a hard time, but how bad is it? To put it into context - in terms of carbon emissions per passenger, flying is worse than every other form of transport. One long haul flight could cancel out all the hard work you've been putting in to reduce the carbon footprint of your home through out the year.

However, rather than preaching to the converted lets get on with looking at some of the alternatives. What's out there for budding carbon cutters, not wanting to compromise on their holiday experience?

Relax in Britain
There are so many nice places to visit on your doorstep, often overlooked by more exotic locations.

Try natural discovery for some inspiration. They've got some great places to stay (including the intriguingly named South Beer Farm!), at affordable prices with each place being committed to environmental improvement.

Breaconcottages.com have some great cottages and farmhouses in Wales. Brecon has plenty of sights, sounds and activities to suit a variety of tastes. Whether you want to go climbing and white water rafting or take a peaceful stroll in the countryside, you'll find something to do in Breacon.

For cottages outside of Wales why not visit english-country-cottages.co.uk

If you want a guide to some luxurious pubs and inns across Britain try Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay. Containing some great reviews of some leading pubs and inns in the UK, this book will tell you where to go for tasty food and great beer.

If Ireland is your preferred designation, try Greenbox. The website contains a number of environmentally friendly holidays 'to relax your body and enliven your soul'.

Travelling within the UK
Think about taking the train to earn bonus points. Trains are going to run whether you're on them or not, whereas your car can rest happily on your drive. No car = no carbon and less resulting arguments from complicated map reading! Book your tickets early at the trainline.com to get discounted tickets and don't forget that two singles might be cheaper!

Going overseas... Keep your feet firmly on the ground
Travelling to a far off exotic place where you can absorb new sights and sounds can be wonderful - some would say it offers too much to be missed. "But how can you get to see the 1,000 things before you die without getting on a plane" I hear you ask? Try the Man in Seat Sixty-One, a website dedicated to overland comfortably & affordably where you might think that air was now the only option.

Go eco
Responsibletravel.com is a leading internet resource if you are looking to book an environmentally responsible holiday. Set up in 2001, with the backing of Anita Roddick (founder of the Body Shop), the website contains some of the best responsible tour companies and hotels in the UK as well as further a field.

Happy holidays!
